Atenea Acevedo translated the full text of a book I edited for the CIDE research institute in Mexico, "Política mundial, cambio y conflicto. Ensayos escogidos de Kal Holsti" (World Politics: Change and Conflict: Selected Essays of Kal Holsti, published in 2005). For the same series, she also translated edited volumes of essays by the prominent International Relations scholars Kenneth Waltz and Robert Keohane. I can think of no-one I would rather have translating my work from English to Spanish, and I also know she is excellent from Spanish to English. Her combination of superb language skills and broad knowledge of the humanities and social sciences, as well as her readiness to take on tough technical translations, makes her unique in my experience. She is also a pleasure to work with. I'm pleased to provide her with my highest recommendation.

As Head of the Canadian government's technical assistance program for emerging/developing market bank and insurance company supervisors, much of our work takes us to Spanish speaking countries. At our two last international conferences of the Center for Global Justice, AC, in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, we have made use of the team of translator/interpreters assembled by Atenea Acevedo. Our 2005 conference on Women and Globalization brought together 200 speakers of English and Spanish from a dozen countries, with highly varied accents and idioms. Conditions were less than ideal. Atenea's team had to work without simultaneous translation equipment. The result was quite amazing: a major international interchange of persons from various disciplines that not only attained publishable results but fostered dozens of ongoing dialogues. And this was certainly due in no small measure to the work of Atenea's extraordinary team. Not only did they provide interpreting at the conference, they did a magnificent job of translating sometimes quite technical papers before the conference. And the depth of their commitment to the alter-globalization movement, the total dedication to international understanding, was a model for all of us. If everyone in our movement were as dedicated we would be much much stronger: hours of hard work, long after papers are over, facilitating sometimes one-on-one conversations. It was an amazing performance that drew a standing ovation at the end of the conference and written complements from many of the participants.

Thanks to help from Atenea above and beyond the call of duty we had simultaneous interpreting equipment at our July 2006 conference on the theme Another World is Necessary. This equipment, combined with the truly outstanding work of Atenea and her team, made for an even more effective conference that was able to work much more successfully toward publishable results. All of these accomplishments were team accomplishments that would not have been possible without Atenea's extraordinary leadership. She was at every moment thinking about the needs of her translators/interpreters, and they responded with their very best. The people with her were all talented and they accepted Atenea's leadership probably because she worked harder than anyone. We would like to say a word about Atenea's own abilities. We got remarks over and over about the high quality of her interpreting: slang, rapidity, technical terms, nothing stopped her clear, even delivery —with the proper emotional emphasis— of the exact expressions. We count Atenea and her team as comrades in our struggle, people we can count on in every sense of the word, who bring out the best in us as well by the sheer power of their dedication and skill, delivered with such generosity and faith.
